The Big 7 Burger was for many years one of Little Chef's premium burgers. It was on the menu from at least the late 1980s until the mid 2000s. The original Big 7 burger was thus called because it was 7 inches in diameter, weighed 7 ounces and had a special bun produced to accommodate it. It was topped with coleslaw and when served to customers they received a polythene bib with the Big 7 logo on it. This original version was a promotional menu item only during the summer season of 1983
"Big 7" referred to the size of the patty - a whopping 7 ounces! The Big 7 was also joined by another "7" burger on the menu - the 7th Heaven. In the 1990s and early 2000s, there was also a Big 7 Cheeseburger on the menu, which is the same as the original but served with two slices of cheese.
Famously, when the burger returned as a 'permanent' item in the late 1980s the Big 7 would be promoted with two badges. One read "I beat the Big 7", and the other "The Big 7 beat me" - customers would be given one or the other depending on if they managed to finish eating the burger or not!
The burger was taken off the menu in 2005. Its not 100% certain as to why this was, but its likely because Little Chef switched to a smaller patty size of 6 ounces, so the name wouldn't have made as much sense.
By the mid 2000s, the Cheese Burger, another Little Chef menu burger, used very similar fillings as the Big 7 previously did - although with a smaller 6 oz patty. This essentially made it it's successor. From here until the end of the chain's existence, the flagship Little Chef Burger was instead The Works Burger.
