The Little Chef at Shipton by Beningbrough first opened in circa. 1987, alongside a filling station at the North Road Garage on the A19 between York and Thirsk.
In 2002, Little Chef was sold by then owners, Compass Catering, to new owners Permira, along with Travelodge. At this time, there was a cull of sites with some older, standalone sites closing, with Shipton by Beningbrough being one of the affected branches. The restaurant closed in 2002 and the building has since played host to a variety of independent businesses, including Vernon's Furniture Warehouse, Rooms for All, Harper's Bistro and Bradley's Fish and Chips. Today, the building stands empty.
