History[]
The Little Chef at Saxham first opened its doors between 1972 and 1976 at a small site on the A45, located around three miles to the west of Bury St Edmunds. It was one of the first sites to have opened on the Cambridge to Ipswich section of the A45 and opened as part of Forte's expansion of the Little Chef chain. Like many other Little Chefs which opened throughout the era of the 1960s and 1970s, the restaurant at Saxham was housed inside of a small, basic, rectangular building with its windows facing out onto the road.
Unfortunately, Saxham doesn't have a lot of history to it as it was a site which was only open for a short amount of time. It closed its doors by 1980 following the construction of the new A45 dual carriageway which resulted in a loss of traffic passing the Little Chef, therefore making it an unprofitable site.
The A45 was later re-numbered the A14 in 1994, following the opening of the A14-M1-A1 link to the west. Today, it serves as one of Britain's busiest roads, ferrying long distance traffic across the country to and from the Midlands.
Today, the restaurant trades as a truck stop named Risby's Truckstop which is highly popular with lorry drivers on the A14.
