History[]

The Little Chef first opened in circa. 1973, on what used to be the A27 between Havant and Chichester. The restaurant replaced an existing independent known as the Black Cat Cafe as part of Forte's rapid expansion of the Little Chef chain in the 1970s and 1980s.

In August 1988, a new dual carriageway between Havant and Chichester, serving as a bypass for the settlements of Emsworth, Southbourne and Broadbridge, had opened to the north of the site. Following the opening of the new dual carriageway, which resulted in long distance traffic now being diverted away from the restaurant, the Little Chef would trade for another five years before closing its doors in 1993. However, and in order to retain their presence in the area, Forte opened a replacement Little Chef on the newly built bypass in 1994, known as the Emsworth branch.

Following the closure of the Little Chef, the building then played host to a Chinese restaurant called Beijing Palace, which closed in 2022. The building now plays host to Mamawu Cafe.
