History[]

The Little Chef at Maghull first opened in circa. 1981 and was built alongside a filling station at the Alt Service Station on the A59 between Liverpool and Preston. The restaurant was strategically located near to Switch Island, a major interchange serving the M57 and M58 motorways.

In 1999, and following their acquisition of Little Chef, Granada sought planning permission to add a Burger King to the Little Chef restaurant; however, and despite obtaining permission from Sefton Council, the Burger King never opened.

In 2005, the Little Chef at Maghull ceased trading, following the cull of 131 Little Chef restaurants by then owners, Permira, nationwide. The adjacent filling station also closed, although its closure was much earlier than the Little Chef.

Following the closure of the Little Chef, the building has since played host to several independent cafes, including the Motor Range Cafe, named after the car sales dealership which sat adjacent, and the short-lived Tinto Coffee House, which opened in 2019 but closed by 2020 owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, the building stands empty and the adjacent land which once hosted the car dealership has since been developed on by ALDI, resulting in the restaurant building now being fenced off. Planning permission was granted to demolish the restaurant building and construct two drive-thru units in its place; however, works are yet to commence.
