History[]
The site was originally built as a transport cafe known as Tony's Cafe in 1964, although it also played host to a fuelling area, shop and toilets. The site was eventually purchased by Trusthouse Forte in 1972, who later added a Little Chef in September 1980. The Little Chef was housed in the western wing of the main building. In 1984, the site was refurbished, whereby Forte introduced their own self-service restaurant, The Granary, to the main building, as well as opening a new forecourt branded Mobil (now BP). A Forte Travelodge was later added in the late 1980s.
In 1988, the site was re-branded as Welcome Break, prior to then being purchased by rival motorway services operator Granada in 1995. Following Granada's takeover, The Granary was removed and a Burger King opened in July 1997. In 2001, the site was re-branded as Moto, under which it still operates as today.
The Little Chef at Grantham North closed in 2008 and its unit was left empty for several years before becoming a KFC in 2024. Prior to 2021, there was a former Little Chef sign positioned above the rear entrance into the services, albeit this was flipped back-to-front.
