Some Little Chefs have stories to tell and Burford is certainly one of them. Positioned in the heart of Burford and dating back to many centuries ago, the site was origially home to the medieval manor of Burford which became part of the Bury Barns Complex at a later stage. It is said that Charles II visited the site during his lifetime and rumours have it that since his visit to the complex, the large, grand building on site became haunted with the sound of clanking horse harnesses being heard. Surely this was all of the hauntings of the site that could've happened........... or was it? It was said that whilst the Little Chef was operating, there were many other disturbing things that were reported here including the sighting of a monk, the sound of singing and mild poltergeist phenomena. Certainly a spooky branch to dine at!
In the early 90s, the Bury Barns building was replaced with a Happy Eater restaurant. If you looked at the design of many other Happy Eater restaurant buildings in this era, you could certainly say that the Burford restaurant was very distinctive in terms of the building.
By the mid 90s, Forte, who acquired Happy Eater in 1986, decided that it was going to phase out the Happy Eater brand and replace it with the more profitable Little Chef brand which they also owned. As a result, the Happy Eater at Burford became a Little Chef restaurant in 1996/97. This was also the time when the site was joined by a Travelodge hotel, giving it a place for tired travellers to rest at for the night.
Following the takeover by Euro Garages in 2017, Burford was one of a number sites converted to a Starbucks in January 2018.
